诗歌背景：
本曲作者史涤平（George C. Stebbins,1846-1945），在近代福音诗歌中占重要一席。他出身于农村，自幼热爱乡村歌曲，十三岁时矢志专攻音乐。 廿二岁迁居芝加哥，在一音乐行工作，并在第一浸信会任音乐主任。 芝加哥大火焚毁了他的教堂，他即转任波士顿教会。
1876年应慕迪邀请，成为该布道团的全时间同工，历时廿三年之久。 他与孙基合编了许多福音诗集。他所作的圣曲中，我们常唱的有：《靠恩得救》（Saved by grace），《耶稣我来》（Jesus, I Come），《今呼召你》（Jesus Is Tenderly Calling），《都归耶稣》（All for Jesus），《凭蛞行》（Have Thine Own Way, Lord），《成圣须用工夫》（Take Time to Be Holy）等等。
