诗歌背景：

 

这诗原名《圣诞日圣诗》，首见于1739年《圣诗本》，原有10节，每节4行歌词，并没有副歌。原歌起首是：“听啊欢声震天响，荣耀归于王上王”。这诗现有版本是原诗的头6节，首见于怀特飞1753年《圣诗集》。

 

        这首诗歌的作者，查理韦斯利（Charles Wesley, 1708-1788），他是卫理公会的创办人之一，也是世界最伟大的圣诗作家之一，他的一生写了六千多首的圣诗，不论质与量都被受肯定。而这首Hark！The Herald Angels Sing，应该是他作品之中最广为流传的代表作品之一。这首诗，一直被唱了一百二十年，却仍然没有固定的曲调，直到1855年时才被Dr. Cunmmings从德国有名的音乐家门德尔颂之作品Festgesang中，摘用其中的一段作为该诗曲调，所以后来的人才比较有统一的唱法，因此目前所采用的通用调便称为"门德尔颂（Mendelssohn）"了，这是孟氏于1840年时为了庆祝印刷术的流传而创作的名曲，但是当他完成这首作品时，就曾经表示：此曲将会受到听众很大的欢迎，但它永远不适用于圣诗。然而事实证明，此曲轻快活泼而且能够振奋人心的特色，将圣诞的气氛完全表现出来，这些优点是孟氏当初所没有想到的。
