这诗自从一七一九年面世以来，已被“万民列邦”唱遍，堪称最早期（很多人也认为是最出色）的宣教诗歌。
一八六二年圣灵降临日，一千多个南太平洋岛民聚集在佐治王座前庆贺新政权诞生。这政权以基督教信仰为纲，治及汤加群岛、斐济群岛、萨摩亚群岛。这些岛民从前大都是食人族战士，可说是被囚在黑暗国度之人，如今都“跳出捆绑束缚”。佐治王信主不久，就决心以耶稣基督为国家元首，并且参照基督教信仰修订国家宪法。
